For each of four consecutive years, Guy Francis Bone Cancer Research Fund has been thrilled to have had a runner in the London Marathon, each making the incredible effort to run the 26.22 miles. They all achieved their own personal challenge whilst at the same time encouraging others to sponsor them in raising funds for research into the bone cancer against which Guy had battled so hard. The thousands of pounds raised by them all has been passed to the Bone Cancer Research Trust where its team of medical and scientific professionals evaluate, select and allocate funds for valuable research to be carried out.

Mel King - 2007.

Mel was the first of the four and described Guy as “an amazing individual” who inspired her to take on the challenge. Having struggling with injuries on the day she was finally was able to write “ I DID IT!  7:26:28 was the "official" time and I was a little disappointed but at least I finished … the heat was a big issue during the day and lots of water stations had run out when some of us got to them. Luckily my support team was on hand with water, fruit, ibuprofen, redbull…… Thanks to everyone who supported and donated the £3,450– you know who you are!!!"

Ceris Crow - 2008.

The following year Ceris, who had been at Teesside University with Guy, finished in just under 5 hours and said"It was overwhelming to finish it and to think that I had raised over £1,800 for the Bone Cancer Research Trust in memory of Guy. The sense of achievement is something that will last forever. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done, and while it was a great experience I think I will stick to running half marathons in future!".

Matt Pannett – 2009.

Matt, Guy’s brother-in-law, made the distance in 4.47.17 and was delighted that he had achieved his aim of under 5 hours. Matt wrote “Thank you so much to everyone that supported me through my training up to and including the race. Your support and generosity really helped me get to the finish line and I am touched and extremely appreciative.”   With Matt’s effort and everyone who sponsored him, £2,400 was raised and Matt continues to give wonderful support to the family and the charity started by Guy.

Gary King – 2010.

The fourth runner was Mel’s Dad, Gary.  As a keen and experienced runner Gary was looking forward to the event but unfortunately gained some injuries in training. It was touch and go whether he would be able to run but he carried on with great determination and succeeded. About £1,000 was raised and it was sometime before he was fully recovered. We are so grateful to Gary for his endurance.

Very many thanks to all four runners. We are delighted you achieved your aim of becoming a marathon runner and appreciate the fantastic determination and generosity you brought to it. We are also extremely grateful for the funds you raised for vital research into bone cancer.
